Pismo will not start up

My Pismo will 'chime' after the power button has been pressed, the screen will light up but nothing else will happen.

I have tried pressing the Restart button (PMU). I have also tried starting and holding down the apple, option P and R buttons and waiting for two chimes (tip from the PowerBook manual). Same result.

I have tried to start up with the PRAM battery removed (and Airport Card removed). I have also removed and reseated the processor.

The machine does seem to be making some sound (whirring of some sort can be heard).

Can anyone think of a particular failure which would give this result?

Pismo 400MHz, 512 MB Ram, OS X 10.3.9

UPDATE:This is a follow on to my question (Pismo will, not start).

I thought that I had got to the bottom of the problem (hard drive failure)but now something has happened to open it up all over again.

I have tried swapping parts from a second 'spares' machine. I have tried to use the hard drive from this but I have been getting the same result as before. When I took the hard drive from the original machine and put it into the spare, it fired up first time!

Any thoughts on what is stopping the first machine from firing up properly?

Anyone?!

Hi, I had this problem of my G3 Pismo after being in storage for three years. It would not power-up. I followed the advice, I havd the machine disconnected from mains power, I flipping open the keyboard, carefully folding it forward to rest on the palm rest area. I slid out the CD drive from the right expansion slot, to see the internal little batteries which plug into a tiny socket on the internal board. I carefully unplugged this battery connector plug from the internal circuit board (my machine had two about the size of a 2pence piece wrapped in a brown cellophane). Then I connected the machine to the mains power (still with keyboard open ) I pressed the power key and the Pismo started up first time. Now I carefully plugged the battery connector plug back into it's socket.

I then reset the computers date and time (it had gone back to 1904 !)I'm waiting a couple of hours before I put the keyboard back in.

I read that these little internal batteries will charge up again - is this correct ?

Thanks, Cath

have you tried starting the machine up in single-user mode?

-> reboot while holding down Command-S

if it boots successfully into single-user mode, try some of the troubleshooting suggestions listed here e.g. items 4 and beyond in that list

I can't think of a specific failure leading to your symptom, but above is worth a try. pulling the PRAM battery has worked for me in the past.

good luck, I hope you can get your Pismo working again, it's a great machine! mine is 9 or 10yrs now and although quite slow it still runs

Thanks for your suggestions.

Reboot + Command-S. No effect.

Reboot + C + install disk in drive. Apple symbol on screen. Nothing further.

Remove RAM sticks (used 1 original 64MB ram). No effect.

Remove hard drive and boot up with Mac OS X disk in optical drive. Result, a flashing icon (swapping between a question mark and a 'finder' icon). Then a screen with 3 icons (a circular arrow, an arrow pointing to the right and an icon of a disk & x 'Mac OS X Upgrade Disk'. Nothing further happened.

It sounds like it is trying to boot with the hard drive removed. Do you have a OS9 or OS10 install disk? If the drive is toast a upgrade disk won't work but an install disk for OS9 or OS10 (up to 10.4) should work. Ralph

Upgrade disks will work if the drive is 'toast'

I always thought an upgrade disk needed something to upgrade. My error. Ralph

I have a copy of Jaguar (10.2) somewhere which should be an install disk and I am due to receive a copy of Tiger (10.4) which I have just bought on eBay. Is it worth trying one of these two install disks?

Do you think that it is the hard drive? I'm wondering if my daughter's opening and closing of the screen, caused damage to the disk by multiple 'spin ups' & 'spin downs'?

Any thoughts?

Mal

You can try a couple of things, running the apple hardware test, booting from the install disk, and connecting to an external display. Also take a look at the ram, you may want to remove/adjust it.

I have tried to start the Pismo with the OS X disk in the machine but 'Catch 22' the machine does not activate enough for anything to happen. It is as if it is hitting a brick wall, it can't get any further.

I will not have access to a monitor until I can get to work.

I removed the processor and reseated it. Should I try replacing the ram as well?

Any more thoughts?

You have to hold down the C or Option key when starting up to boot from the optical drive.

I suggest removing extended ram too.

You could try starting up with the hard drive disconnected using your system disk. If that doesn't work try removing one ram stick at a time. Good luck. Ralph

Additional thought--if removing the hard drive doesn't work try removing the optical drive. Fortunately these things are very easy to do with a Pismo. Ralph

Thank you Ralph.

I have tried starting with the optical drive removed. No joy.

I will try and remove the memory sticks as I still have the smaller ram sticks which came with the machine originally.

With regard to the 'system disk', are you referring to my OS X install disk? Should I try booting (holding down key C at startup) to boot from the disk in the optical drive?

Please excuse my ignorance, I am still rather new to Macs; having the Pismo has taught me a great deal in a very short time.

Yes I was referring to the install disk. You could have done a lot lot worse for your first Mac. The Pismo is very easy to work on and parts are inexpensive. Ralph

I think that the hard drive is the problem. I have managed to boot the Powerbook with my Jaguar install disk. I removed the hard drive and on starting the Powerbook, I was shown a Mac OS X installation screen. There appears to be a wear mark on the connector cable, whether this is related to the problem, I can only guess.

I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions, you have been a great help to me.

Any further suggestions with regard to hard drives?

Best regards

Mal

I am going to connect up a 'new' hard drive and see what happens. The supplier has suggested that a 'disc controller' fault could be the problem; this would indicate a problem on the main logic board. Has anyone had this kind of problem? Mal

Also Press and hold P and R keys. (PR=pram) When screen lights up. Count 5seconds.let go of start button- keep Hold of ctrl and p and R
