Try factory resetting the device:
main menu -> Settings -> Initialise -> Factory Reset.
Otherwise I believe that issue is with either the flash or the battery. You can try turning off the camera, removing the battery, leaving the battery out for a few minutes, and then putting it back in and turning it on.

It didn't work for us.

It didn't work for us. Tried chatting with sony. they said send it in for repair. Looks like it might cost $151. I'd love it if someone did a repair for the flash instructions. I think we'll use the camera without a flash.
