Can I still repair my keyboard connector?

Hi, I just replaced my macbook’s clutch cover and charging port.

When removing the motherboard I accidentally damaged the keyboard connecter, I think, the right side of the keyboard (including the power button, enter, delete, and at least O and P key).

Also it no longer turns on anymore, even when connected t charger, but that’s a different matter.

In the video you can probably see the connector pushing itself up after being pushed down.

Can I rip the connector, glue it back on, or have a replacement, or get a new motherboard/macbook entirely?

Please, DONOT attempt to glue this on. It wont work and will simply just make repair x10 harder.

  • There are a few things you can do before deciding to get a replacement Mobo. If you’re comfortable with soldering, you can purchase seperate keyboard connectors from anywhere like eBay. I’ve also linked a guide here to replacing a 2011 Macbook Pro Keyboard Connector: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FltXSUH3.... If you have no idea what you’re about todo with your device, best to leave things be or take it to a trusted repair shop with the keyboard connector part so they can solider it on for you.
  • A replacement motherboard is always an option. Keep in mind, you will have to swap parts like the Fan,RAM, HDD etc. to the new one, once it has arrived.

While buying a new Macbook Pro is an option it’s best to take these steps first before declaring it fully dead and unusuable.

Thanks, I've seen the video but I have no experience in soldering whatsoever so I'm going to professionals this time.

What happens if I replace the motherboard? Does it impact the OS and require reinstallation? I already have my files backup in a separate harddrive with time machine?

@macneedsupgrade No, not at all. Plug in a USB and use the app named 'Time Machine' to create the latest backup of your Mac. As said, you will need to transfer RAM,HDD,CMOS Battery and fan assembly if needed. Motherboards can easily be brought on eBay used and they should last you another good 5 years before it's truly time to put the Mac in the Trash. There are tones of Tutorials on YouTube on how to swap these parts. The old keyboard can obviolsy be re-used along with the Screen, Battery and Trackpad. I wish you luck with this repair.
