Disc Drive Ejects Discs Randomly

I got this laptop from a friend.

It works perfectly fine except that sometimes the disc drive just ejects the disc even though the eject button wasn't pushed beforehand.

It doesn't seem to follow a pattern.

What would you recommend me to do?

Added Info/Correction:

There may be a pattern: It happens more often when installing software.

I would just take the DVD drive out:

The machine is almost 20 years old but it does have 1Gb network card.

Unfortunately the HD is IDE so can't be upgraded to an SSD SATA drive.

Maximum 2GB (2 x 1GB) RAM.
