Fan won't turn on (main fuse blown)

Hi, my Dyson AM09 fan was knocked over and stopped working. I've taken it apart and noticed the main fuse (F1) doesn't have continuity running through it. The rest of the circuit board looks fine (see images attached). However, I'm relatively inexperienced when it comes to electronics. If I replace the fuse, is there any way to ensure it doesn't instantly blow again?

I'm also struggling to locate the fuse (46211600000) in the UK. Would any T1.6A 250v fuse be a suitable replacement/ are there any specialist shop in London where I could locate a replacement part?

Hi @aaronmason94673

You can order the fuse from Digikey UK

Without a schematic you could try is to use an Ohmmeter and with the power disconnected, measure between the output side of the fuse and an earth point on the board. You should not measure a short circuit i.e. 0.00 Ohms. If you do the fuse will blow.

Perhaps order 2 fuses that way if it does blow you have a replacement for after you find out why the 1st one blew. ;-)

Hi @jayeff, thanks for this. I measured between the output side of the fuse and the earth point on the board and it didn't read a short so fingers crossed.

Unfortunately Digikey UK is coming from the US with some fairly expensive shipping costs. I found this on eBay which looks comparable (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283199315985 -T1.6A) and comes in a pack of three, just in case, do you think it would work? Many thanks

Hi @aaronmason94673

Electrically i.e. rating wise they're OK but I think that the fuses you found would be physically too small to sufficiently bridge between the solder pads for the fuse on the motherboard for a good connection.

The fuses that you found are smd package size 2410 i.e. 6.1mm x 2.6 mm x 2.6mm. Scroll down to the bottom of the Ebay page that you linked.

I'm not sure but looking at the data sheet for the fuse series (462) you posted its size is 10.5mm x 4.5mm x 4.5 mm.

You can confirm this by measuring the dimensions of the faulty fuse that is in situ to get a rough idea of the actual size.

If you find a fuse that fits etc, don't be surprised if it blows too. Perhaps not when power is first connected and the fan is turned on but maybe when some other function is then selected e.g. hi heat etc.

There's always a reason why a fuse blows. Rarely does it fail of its own accord.

My HP01 has exactly the same issue after running it on an inverter. I got a 10pk of fuse from ebay and solder one on. Now the fan is working.

@billchishunho I have an HP01 that also appears to have the F1 fuse blown and I am going to be attempting the repair with the link in your comment. Have you experienced any issues since replacing the fuse? Do you have any tips for soldering on the new one?

I just used the fan last night again. It works great. I just laid the new fuse side way and bended the pins to be in contact with the end caps of the old fuse for soldering. I need to use solder wax to make the solder joints.
