Does this metal plate serve to dissipate heat or something? Because the only thing on the other side of it is a battery, and I can’t see how it would short anything

It’s important!
When correctly mounted it offers a bit more structure rigidity (case torsional twist) as well as offer structure for the battery. It also helps in controlling debris and liquid entry and lastly helps control the air flows as you don’t want air leakage to areas that don’t need cooling.
