VCR does not eject tapes

My Sony SLV585HF VCR will accept and play VHSes perfectly, but when it comes to ejecting them, it just whirs and then the VHS stays inside the machine. I had to open up the top and very carefully extricate the actual tape part of the VHS with tweezers to get the VHS out. How do I get it to eject VHSes again? Thanks!
