Battery doesnt even last a minute

My new laptop which i bought secondhand has terrible battery
It does have a hard drive which prolongs the boot, but even still, off the charger I never even get to enter my password as it plummets from 100 to 0% in less than a minute

A laptop with a bad battery is just a bad desktop, so I want to have some battery life at least - so at the very least i can transfer between rooms without having to shut the laptop off and on again

Is the only plausible fix to replace the battery?

Hi @mrads_

Is there an indication that the battery gets to be fully charged when charging it?

If Win10 or Win11is installed create a battery report to check the state of the battery.

When you have the report, compare the Design Capacity value versus the Full Charge Capacity value as shown by the report. For a good battery the values should be nearly the same.

You can work out the condition of the battery as a percentage by using the formula Full Charge Capacity value x 100 ÷ Design Capacity value.

If it's as bad as you suggest, here's the owner manual.

Go to p.28 to view the procedure to remove/replace the battery.

The battery part number is printed on the battery (YRDD6 - 56Wh capacity or WDX0R - 42Wh capacity). Search online for the part number only, to find suppliers that suit you best

Hi

1 - Windows says 100% charged

2 - It dies faster than it charges so I can’t even use it plugged in - it still shuts off

3 - I can’t do the formula without the battery

Also I talked with the seller - apparently he never took it off the charger. He used it like a desktop. So I can put the two together and say he killed the battery

Reasonable to ask for a partial refund?

@mrads_

Batteries are designed to be used (although not to a point of being completely depleted every time) so being constantly charged doesn't prolong their life. It actually shortens it.

If you still have it, check the description of the laptop in the ad posted by the seller.

If it mentions anything re battery problems (or perhaps "sold as is") then you were supposedly aware that there may be problems and took the risk.

If it didn't specify and stated working laptop or even no description at all, you can ask for a partial refund to recoup some (or all) of the cost of a replacement battery or even ask for a full refund, but then you would need to return the laptop (and probably pay for postage)

@jayeff he never mentioned battery and about shortening battery by being constantly on charged that’s what I said

I only know this cos I talked with him

As for refund, I think I’ll let it slide cos the laptop was only $240. I thought he didn’t know what he was selling so I was like whatever since returns were accepted within two weeks

@mrads_

Replacement battery prices are all over the place.

Suggest you find a seller that offers some sort of guarantee, e.g. ifixit offers a 1 year guarantee on it which others don't. There are a lot of fakes out there.
