@rodneybateman11 that sounds like you may have a vacuum leak and/or a bad PCV valve. To check for a vacuum leak, you can gently spray a slight mist of some brake cleaner around the vacuum lines. It just needs a mist, no need to to lay a heavy fog :-) Be careful since you need to do that on a running engine. Make sure you keep loose clothing and hands away from any rotating parts. If the RPMs increase, the engine is sucking in the cleaner and you found your leak.

A bad PCV valve can cause to much pressure inside your crankcase. That can cause oil to be pushed to the outside of the engine block, into your air filter etc. and can give you the issues you describe here "seem hot with smoke coming off of it burning the grease on motor"

This" at same time brakes will get hard to push" is most likely caused by the same vacuum leak. The vacuum needed for the brake booster comes directly from the engine intake manifold. So, a Vacuum leak there can also cause a hard pedal or high pedal effort.

Time to play detective and snoop around the engine compartment ;)

Use the WJ service manual that you can download from this page 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ to work on your Jeep. Let us know what you find out.
