The Toshiba Satellite E45-B4200, has a replaceable heat sink. Running a system with a faulty heatsink can quickly destroy the processor and melt the motherboard. This could make the whole system useless. As with the fan, replacing the heatsink is a much less expensive fix than replacing an entire system. If you are having a heating and cooling issue, make sure it isn't any other issue that you can find on the the Toshiba Satellite E45-B4200 Troubleshooting page.

Before beginning this repair, be sure to turn off the laptop, unplug the power cord, and remove the external battery. This device didn't have an external battery so we weren't able to demonstrate that step. In addition, the fan was broken off the heat sink so it will likely look different than your device.

Make sure to turn off the device, remove the battery, and unplug the laptop from the charger prior to the disassembly.
Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver to remove fourteen 3.75 mm screws from the back cover.
Use a spudger or opening tool to gently separate the back cover from the top of the device. Work your way around the perimeter of the laptop and undo the clips with the spudger.
Remove the back case.
