Thought it was time to give my Macbook Pro a good cleaning and some upgrades. I was looking at all the 2017-2018 Macbook Pros, but with the butterfly keyboard issues, screen cable pinching issue, shortage of ports (for my needs; I'm a music composer, so may not apply to all), non upgradable storage, and just overall very expensive it made me think what could I do to improve my situation.
So, enter iFixit. They have very detailed, comprehensive (with pictures) guides on their website, allowing any one with a little patience and know how to perform maintenance and upgrades. I used their install guide for installing dual hard drives, but the complete tear down is also available.

The whole process was pretty straightforward, thanks to iFixit's excellent guide. Make sure, though, you have the right tools. I ordered the Macbook pro screwdriver/screws combo kit from iFixit. I also ordered the data doubler kit (replaces internal DVD drive with another hard drive) from macsales.com because I had a store credit, but it's also available on iFixit.

Just follow the iFixit guide. Clean out the fans while you have the case open to get out the dust bunnies. Make sure to replace the lower case screws at a very slight angle, or they may have a tougher time going in and you could possibly strip the screw head, as it's pretty small. Other than that, I'm happy to say I have 2 drives (500gb SSD and 500gb regular hd for scratch files). 16gb ram, quad core i7, 2 USB ports, Firewire, Thunderbolt, SD card reader AND a separate port for the Magsafe power adapter that does NOT take up one of the USB ports like on the current Macbook Pro, that's why the 2012 Macbook Pro 15" is THE BEST MACBOOK PRO. EVER.
