Dead Laptop

The HP Pavilion Laptop does not turn on.

Drained battery

First, remove the battery and unplug the DC Power Adapter. Plug in the DC Power Adapter while the battery is still removed. Press and hold the Power button for 30+ seconds. The laptop should turn on. Replace battery in the back of laptop, charging indicator light should light up as your battery charges.

Failure in battery charging circuit

First, remove the battery and unplug the DC Power Adapter. Plug in the DC Power Adapter while the battery is still removed. Press and hold the Power button for 30+ seconds. The laptop should turn on. Replace battery in the back of laptop, charging indicator light should light up as your battery charges. If battery indicator light does not illuminate, the battery charging circuit is failing.

Laptop turns on but screen is black

The laptop has a black screen during start up.

Memory failure

Get to RAM using (insert hyperlink) instruction. Unplug the one stick of RAM and see if the laptop is will startup and run without any black screen crashes. Attempt this with both sticks to see if any of those two RAM sticks is the cause. Replace or upgrade the faulty stick if you want to maintain or increase the performance of the device.

Display adapter not plugged in

This could be caused by a poor connection between the video card and the display. Plug in an external display to see if there is any signal output to the external display. If the external display works fines that might mean that there is a short in the cable leading to the display or that the cable on the motherboard is not properly seated.

Laptop turns off repeatedly

Laptop randomly turns off during normal use.

Overheating of power supply

The laptop could have a malfunctioning charger or charging circuit. Try a different power supply to see is the issue is localized to the power supply.

Clogged cooling fan

While the laptop is running, monitor the temperature of the laptop. If the laptop is overheating, most of the time the fan in the laptop is either clogged or the motor in the fan has died. You will need to open the shell of the computer to locate the fan. Use air duster to clean out fan and then replace. Reboot your laptop to see if the fan is working properly or making unnecessary noises. If fan seems to be working properly, your fan was clogged. If the fan is making noises or not working at all, you will need to find a new motor for your fan.

Laptop makes loud noise while running

The laptop is being loud or is producing a clicking noise.

Clogged fan

Use a air duster can on the fans after taking off the back panel. Make sure that none of the dust is in the laptop when putting it back together. If the noise persists from the fans then you might have a dying fan and should replace the whole fan.

Failing hard drive

Turn laptop upside down, remove large backing piece. Locate hard drive. Remove the hard drive and turn on the laptop. If the noise persists, it is most likely the fan. If the noise stops, this means that your hard-drive is failing due to a vibrating platter or indirect contact of the needle to the platter. Backup your data and replace your hard-drive. For increased performance, replace with a SATA SSD drive.

Sudden shutdowns or freezing

Laptop begins slowing down and eventually freezes or shuts down.

Overheating

Get to the heatsink assembly using by removing the whole back panel. Before removing the assembly make sure that the fans are unplugged from the motherboard and that all the screws necessary have been removed. Carefully remove and clean the heatsink of any thermal paste using alcohol. Apply a new drop of thermal paste onto the CPU.  Place the heatsink assembly back into its rightful place.

Computer viruses

Open task manager and locate what is the most utilized out of CPU, RAM, DISK. Then locate the process that is causing this high utilization an end it. Depending on many different factors you may want to download an antivirus program and run a full system scan to see if there are any installed programs that might be leaching off your system. Check you Start-up tab in task manager and disable any program that you don’t need running in the background.

Backlight fails

The laptop either has a black screen during start up or screen randomly turns black during use with only a faint image.

Backlight lamp failure

Begin with a new backlight lamp with the connector already attached to it, these can be found online. It should be used to test if the current backlight is the cause of failure by unplugging the old light and plugging in the new light. If the new backlight does not light up, the problem is with the screen inverter.

Failed screen inverter

Acquire a new screen inverter either online or from an old salvageable laptop. Test the new screen inverter.

Color distortion

The display is a discolored or garbled image.

Failed graphics card

Connect the laptop to an external monitor. If the garbled image is still there that means that the graphics card is failing.To fix this requires a whole motherboard replacement since the graphics card is soldered onto the motherboard.

Poor connection of motherboard

Connect the laptop to an external monitor. If the issue is present on the external monitor then it means that there is a poor connection between the graphic card or motherboard. If the image is clean that means that there is a poor connection between the laptop screen and the motherboard.
