Computer Freezes/Locks up

The computer does any of the following: Windows stops responding to mouse and keyboard input, nothing moves on the computer display, the mouse cursor is in constant busy mode, or programs stop responding.

Updates Needed

A computer may run slow, freeze, or lock up if it is in need of updates. Update drivers and software with Windows Update. Search Windows for ‘update’, then click Windows Update. If updates are available to download, click Install now. If no updates are available, click Check for Updates, then click Install now if there are any new updates.

Overheating

Computer overheating causes unresponsive apps, windows failing to open or stops responding, and unexpected restarts. Overheating is caused by the following: dust accumulation inside the computer and at the vents, cooling fans slow down or wear out overtime, or high ambient temperature. To resolve this issue, clean the fan vents, remove dust from inside the case, and ensure fan is operating.

Viruses or Malware

If the computer has a poor performance, it might have a virus or malware. Scan the computer for viruses and malware. If you have a third party program to protect your computer, then go ahead and follow their instructions for scanning your computer. If you use Windows Defender, click Windows Defender>Update Definitions. Then select a scan option, if you have not scanned your PC recently use Full>Scan Now. Then simply follow the on-screen instructions to remove any malware or viruses.

Hardware Issues

Run a Hardware Diagnostics System Quick Test, this checks the processor, system board, hard drive, memory and battery. Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key about once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) screen displays. Click System Tests> Quick Test>Run Once. The test takes 10 to 15 minutes. If any components fail, follow this link to further troubleshoot.

No Sound

There is either no sound coming from the speakers, or the sound is of very poor quality.

Muted Speakers

Click on the Sound icon in the notification area, make sure there is no red crossed out circle on top of the sound icon this would mean your computer is muted. Unmute it by clicking on the Sound icon, and then drag the volume slider to a different level.

Faulty External Speakers

Perhaps your speakers are broken, try testing the sound through headphones to check if the issue is related with the computer or the speakers. Locate the headphone port on the side or back of the computer and plug in your headphones. Click the Sound icon in the notification area, then click and drag the volume slider to a different level. If you hear a beep through your headphones, then your computer hardware is functioning. If you don’t hear a beep, follow this link to HP's troubleshooting page.

Bad Speaker Connections

Ensure your speaker cables are connected to the correct sound connectors. Right-click the Speaker icon in the task bar, then select Playback devices. Select the speaker device, then click Properties. The Speaker Properties window has a list of color-coded connectors that corresponds to each pair of speakers. Use this information to correctly connect your speakers. Test speaker again. If you still don’t have any sound, you might be experiencing hardware issues.

Hardware Issues

Run an Audio test from the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI). This will check the audio device, as well as the functionality of the audio controllers and codecs. This test is a bit lengthy and perhaps complicated for non-tech savvy individuals, so please follow this link for detailed instructions from the manufacturer.
