My power supply buzzes when im playing games.

I’ve tried multiple PSs and they all make buzzing noise while I’m playing

it stops immediately after exiting the game

note:all of the pc parts are new except for one hdd.

could it be a virus? I’m suspecting a cracked game to be the reason , couse when i changed the MB the sound disappeared until I lunched the potential reason.

Hi @falcon_f5 ,

Just an observation, but are the PSU adequate for the task?

When playing games more power is required as the hardware needs to perform to cope with the demands of the game.

For example if you have a high end graphics card installed what is the recommended PSU power (wattage) required as shown by the card manufacturer for the graphics card to perform as designed.

Is the currently installed PSU operating at its' upper limits to accommodate the card?

PS wattage is more than enough run the pc.

650w

GTX1070

Used to make the same noise with my GTX960

Hi @falcon_f5 ,

Fair enough,

The specs say 500W so it is as you say, more than enough.

Hi @falcon_f5 ,

You say you suspect a virus.

Have you done a full virus scan of the PC then, to prove or disprove that it may be the cause?

I have not, but I’m planning to do a full format to the system after this semester (4 weeks drom now) but i will try scanning it.@jayeff

It’s coil whine. I hear this on most of my gaming computers. I use headphones / have the case closed to drown out the noise coming from the GPU / PSU.

If the game is very GPU intensive / outputting 300+ frames the coil whine will be pretty noticeable. The severity will vary depending on a combination of what power supply is being used and in some cases the graphics card itself (some GPUs will be quieter and some will be more louder).

I read about coil whine issue and that’s why I bought a new PSU, but the buzzing sound didn’t stop. Even less GPU demanding games such as Rocket League with limited 60 FPS, or staring at the main menue screen are enough to make it buzz. @benjamen50

hello Khaled , a buzzing noise in a power supply is a faulty component inside the power supply it self. it could have been from over working the power supply or it could have been a weak component from the start. nothing to worry about but i would prepare for an upgrade soon, also get a different brand name then the current one.

That’s what i first thought. So I tried 4 different PS and they all buzz, i tried new&used. Hard to blame the PS after all of that @fasttrackpro

then you might be pulling power when you are playing the game. maybe a larger power supply is what you need. that was my first thought. @Khaled

@falcon_f5 Were all of the PSUs that you tried the same voltage?

I assume that you mean wattage.

They were different, I remember trying some 650w and 1200w @fasttrackpro

that's exactly the same noise I'm having, I didn't want to believe that it's coil whine cause I remember playing without it.

thanks for your answer, I will try the last solution which is formatting the pc I have a feeling that it will help a lot.
