Please Help! Modified Charger HELP!

OK I bought a laptop for $25, a Toshiba Satellite C855 S5115. The only thing “Out of Place" was the charger doesn't disconnect, as if the wiring is soldered to the “power source" of the mother board or something inside.

Any who, one day it just stopped charging and eventually the battery died and now I can't charge it again. I have files on there that are very important to me and would like to use or have access to them. Please help !

Can anybody tell me how to open this and take a look at what exactly is “modified" ? Maybe guide me to at least “re-modify" it to make it charge and power on again…and maybe a guide to reverse the modification back to normal ?

I can take pics as we go on, but the pics I'm providing are the “charger” and the model info. The OS is Win10.

On another note…I also have a HP Pavilion Slimline (which also runs Win10) that I can't remember the after boot up access password to. Couldn't I just take my hard drive from the Toshiba laptop and use it in my HP desktop and access those files that way ? Or.is it more complicated than that ? Or near impossible?

But I'd really like to get my laptop up and running and have that to use, so my focus for answers is more towards the issue with that, but all comments are welcome.

Thanks guys !

Looks like the wire on charger cable end to module is damaged from being pushed back and forth from moving it around.

Also looks like I can reverse the modification and replace the DC module and charger to normal.

What do you guys think ?

How about that chassis @nick ? Look good ?

A jack like this ?

Doesn't look like it has the characteristic cracking to me in what I can see in the photo. Get a new jack to be sure it's going to work.

Don't get a China pride (junk) charger. You're better off with a Targus universal charger if it's one of those or a universal.

I have to go with what I can afford at the moment...I'm ordering the DC module piece along with a charger tomorrow. The charger I'm buying is 65w output, the original charger is 90w...will this affect the charging of the battery or the battery its self ? What should I look for as far a specs when buying the charger ?

의 답변

Depends on what the notebook shipped with. Some require a 90W adapter, while others use a 65W but are 90W compatible. I usually recommend 90W to be sure it'll always work as I don't always know your system.

의 답변

How can I find that out ?

의 답변

Never mind I found one thats 90w. The charger I have with it is 90w.

Hi @incognegro918 ,

You can connect the laptop’s HDD into another computer to retrieve your files.

Here’s an example of the various ways to do this.

It may be prudent to back up your files this way before trying to fix the laptop as at least this way you have them in case anything goes wrong with the repair and corrupts the HDD for example, unless you remove the HDD that is ;-)

Here’s a link to the ifixit Toshiba Satellite C855-S5115 Repair guide, which should be of some help to gain access to the motherboard etc.

As you say, it appears as though the DC-In jack has been bypassed and the DC Power is connected directly to the appropriate connections on the motherboard.

The DC-In jack is a plug in module (example only) so if the connector on the motherboard hasn’t been ruined by the “modification” then perhaps you can replace the jack and then re-modify the power adapter so that it has the correct plug on it so that the laptop has a standard removable external power connection again.

Thanks jayeff, I'm going to try to open the back/bottom and see about the plug in module and the condition of the motherboard. I accept your answer but I want to keep the thread going until its fixed and finished, in case someone runs into this problem too.

@jayeff I'll bet you it was done because this chassis is worse than others in terms of this issue. Been there, done that. We had an L755 that the dog used as a bathroom and it had the same problem before that incident. It's gone now and it'll be the last Toshiba we get. This is a common problem for Toshiba and almost every PC OEM on the consumer side.

The original owner probably had a problem with the jack because the chassis was flexed badly enough to break the chassis and jack. I have a feeling the area they push the socket into the chassis and it broke in such a way it no longer holds the original jack it was designed to. Hopefully, they preserved the SMD connector on the board and just cut the modular jack so you can glue it in with hot glue.

Make sure the chassis is intact when you open it to fix the jack. Many consumer grade laptops made since ~2007 are so cheaply made this is a normal problem. It can be fixed with hot glue, but it needs a new chassis and support to fix it properly. The issue is this will total out the laptop because of the cost of parts. That part doesn’t concern me…

I’m more concerned if the previous owner left the connector intact and only cut the power jack cable; hope for that. If they also removed the SMD connector this is going to be a lot more difficult to reverse. You did get it for $25, so if they did modify the board this won’t be an expensive write-off, if you aren’t willing to fix the board.

Hey nick, the module and charger came in. How do I install this right ? And I think I lost my screws to screw it back together, where can I buy some replacement screws ?

의 답변

Toshiba's chassis makes it a press in part - there are no screws to lose for that part.

If you're referring to the bottom cover screws, you can probably find a screw set online.
