Power board chip U2 overheating (but shouldn’t even be there)?!

Bought a series x controller (known faulty, no power) from eBay thinking maybe fix, maybe for spares. If I couldn’t fix it I would have resigned it to that but I’m a little stumped by what I found…

The power board looks mostly the same as ones I’ve seen before and in pictures but, well take a look…

U2

What is this?! I’m pretty sure it’s some sort of power regulator but it’s not in any pictures I’ve seen of the 1914 board! The marking on the chip is EW=9J S10. It’s also the chip at U3, neither of which I can find on searches of pictures of the board

Anyway, U2 is overheating big time and I’m fairly certain it’s the cause of no power. Any suggestions? I’m thinking to just take it off and see if that fixes the general power problem (I believe U2 is for power to the rumble motors in a previous model) but wanted to see if anyone had come across this before?

I’ve checked capacitors nearby and around the board but nothing seems shorted. Only odd thing I noticed was pin 4 of J3 only putting out 0.94v when I think it’s supposed to be 3.3v, but I may be wrong.

Any help hugely appreciated. New to the forum and pretty new to fixing!

Hi Paul!

Maybe it’s for the better to replace the U2,U3 and J3 first. Perhaps MS did a small revision so that the U2 and U3 are needed to get it to work. If it still fails, you can take the IC off to see if it works. If not, then you do need to check some other components on the board.

@paulcharles1234 I definitely agree with @dan0 on this. U2 looks a bit gnarly, like it may have gotten hot. I tried to find out what those IC's are but have not found any information on those. The markings seem to be proprietary. You may need to depend on finding another board and using that as a donor board to harvest the IC's from that.

If you can't find anything, post your images on the Digikey forums. Their engineers and support people are usually pretty helpful with trying to identify components.

Thanks both, very helpful! My main problem is identifying the chip so I’ll definitely put it on digikeys. Unfortunately I don’t have any donor boards with that layout, hence being so stuck! On the Xbox one s/x controllers (1708) the U2 and U3 chips look a bit different and on the other series x/s controllers they just aren’t there! I noticed the button pads are a different pattern too which suggests a revision of sorts, or I’ve been sold a dud!

Yeah, could also be country related. Maybe the US motherboard version is different then a EU motherboard version. It's possible. Anyway, replacing the U2 and the U3 is a good start :)! Hopefully you will find those components!! Good luck!!
