Sony Bravia XBR-49X800G Can I replace the WiFi module?

I've gone through all the diagnostics and have concluded that the WiFi module on my Sony Bravia TV (XBR-49X800G) has failed. When I try to turn on the TV's WiFi in Settings, the Built-in WiFi works at it for about 5 seconds, then it reverts back to gray (Off). I've updated the firmware via a USB drive and I also tried reverting to the factory settings, all to no avail. Other devices in the house connect flawlessly to our WiFi. I really want to avoid having to run an ethernet cable from the modem/router to the TV, so I'm wondering about a DIY replacement of the WiFi module, assuming I can get hold of a new one.

Does anyone know if it's feasible to replace the WiFi module? Is there more to it than simply replacing a piece of hardware?

Thanks for any insight.

Hi @mnron,

Does the TV indicate that other WiFi networks are available? If none at all it may be an antenna problem in the TV and perhaps because the signal level is too low it won't try to connect and turns off the WiFi. This is only a guess though. Other networks would have a weaker signal than your local home network but may still show up on the TV if they're considered strong enough. Just that you can't connect because you wouldn't know the password for them.

If you have a laptop/phone etc, turn on its WiFi and then hold it close to the TV i.e. <15cm and check if it is detected. Just what I'd try.

You can try replacing the module and at least you will know whether it now works OK or if the problem is still there.

Here's the page in the service manual showing the location of the WLAN/BT module.

The module part number is 1-458-998-12 (supplier examples only). Ensure that any replacement module has the same board number and revision number (if any), as the original just in case there are differences between boards. Although boards with a higher revision number would be OK as usually it means that they've been updated for a reason. Boards having a different board number unless guaranteed that they're compatible, is a different matter.

The TV disassembly procedure starts on p.5 of the manual.
