Charges, but no power?

Hi,

I came into a MX Mechanical (full size) at a local discount store, and though new in box upon opening it revealed a dent on the top right corner. That established, the device takes power and has a full battery, the LED pulses when charging, but the on switch doesn't seem to serve any function, as it doesn't present itself for discovery. I've tried Bluetooth on three different devices, the included bolt receiver and an older logi unifying receiver all to no avail. I've gone as far as dissembling the device, and though the brown cable does appear a bit pinched, it isn't by any means (visibly) severed. I've tried the Esc+O (2x), Esc+B, reset along with Esc+Fn all to no avail. I'd appreciate any guidance!

Hi @roted

Given that the dent is near the Power switch, use a DMM (digital multimeter) to check if the Power On/Off switch is electrically OK and its connection to the board also

Here's the ifixit Disassembling Logitech MX Mechanical guide that will help to access the power button.

Very much appreciative for the prompt response! Though I know I'll, in the long term, appreciate and value from it, I was so hoping to avoid purchasing anything else haha. But I'm not surprised at the suggestion and will indeed give it a shot.

If it is indeed the board, do you imagine a repair may be possible with something as simple as solder? Since the LED pulses when it's connected to power, and stops (suggesting a full battery), I'm definitely of the belief that the issue is from that board downward (since the battery connection flows upward), but I couldn't really see anything aside from the pinched brown cable.

@roted

The battery charging circuit most probably isn't tied to the power on/off switch inasmuch as all the switch would do is to send a signal to the controller in the keyboard to turn on (or off it is is on already).

basically you need to prove with a meter that the switch works and that it has a good electrical connection to the board. Mechanical and visual checks don't tell you if it is really OK or not electrically unless it's totally obvious that there's a problem e.g. broken, burnt out. dry solder joint etc

If the Power switch is a non locking switch with only a two wire connection you could try temporarily shorting out the connection(1-2 seconds) and see if that worked. If it is a locking type then leave the short on. Be careful that you don't touch anything else when trying this.

Post a close up image showing the power button, its board connection, surrounding area etc in your question.
