chimes once, no picture, fan runs all the time
Has power, chimes one time, no display, fan at top of machine runs constantly.
power / sleep light stays on all the time

You should connect to an external monitor and see if that display works. If it doesn't it points to video card/chip problems. If it does then run your AHT (Apple Hardware Test) disk it can tell you more about what might be wrong. Also see these Answers
