To avoid a cold solder joint it would be more advisable to not touch the solder to the soldering iron to melt the solder on the joint. It always more advisable to put the tip of the soldering iron to the joint and the solder touching the joint as well. As this allows both to reach the same tempature and when cooling down the solder joint and won't stress and crack resulting in cold solder joints.
